VKB works with Treo 700w

The Treo 700w does work with the VKB, despite what I’d heard for months.  It isn’t the 700w, it’s the Windows Mobile 5.0 it runs on, that makes it work.  The challenge is that there is no documentation or step by step instructions on either.  If there were, it would be a 2-minute process.  It’s unbelievably easy.

That wasn’t my experience unfortunately.  It took me an hour of over-thinking the setup, reading through the Quick Start Guide, and looking at the other phone and PC’s setups, before I let the OS find the device on its own.  There are a few steps that need explaining, though, and I credit the Whole Process Summary in this Forum for giving me SECRET #1 that broke the code for me.  Here it is:

1. Charge the VKB for 2 hours.
2. SECRET #1:  Reset the VKB.  (Power on so that keyboard display shows, stick paper clip end into Reset hole on side, pick up VKB which turns it off, put it back down, power back on.  Blue light on top of VKB will blink every 2-3 seconds.  Keyboard display should be showing.)
You’re done with the VKB.

On the Treo:
3. Select the Bluetooth icon in upper right corner of Start screen
4. Check ‘Turn on Bluetooth’, Check ‘Make this device discoverable’
5. Select Devices tab, then select New Partnership
6. Select ‘VKB Keyboard’ when it finds it (could take 30-60 seconds), then Next
7. Enter between 1-8 characters for a Passkey.  After a few seconds the VKB will beep – enter the same characters on the VKB keyboard display SECRET #2 followed by the return key - left arrow with upwards line, third button down on the right.  (Since I wasn’t used to the feel of the keyboard yet, when I put in 4 characters it was entering some two and three times.  I started this part over, and just pressed a single P in the upper right corner of the phone and the display to get past this part. This was the most difficult part of the entire process.)
8. Verify the screen confirming it’s setting up a new partnership for VKB Keyboard
9. For Display Name, either accept the ‘VKB Keyboard’ default or enter a name
10. Check “Input Device”
11. Save

Open a program on the Treo that accepts input (Word, Excel, etc) , Select ‘New”, and be amazed.

I was concerned that no software had been loaded on either my PC, laptop, or the Treo.  I wondered how I could run the VKB software in the background as one of the manuals states.  I also thought I needed the software to adjust the VKB settings.  Neither is the case.  I turned the Treo and the VKB off for an hour, turned them back on, and the keyboard was immediately paired without any input.  In the back of one of the User Guides is a list of Special Combination Keys – four of which control the VKB’s Projection Intensity, and touch Sensitivity.  If anyone knows how to turn the sounds off and on, without the VKB software, I’d love to know how.

I hope this helps any Mobile 5.0 users trying to set this up with their phone.

Do you have any information on turning the vkb keystroke sound off while using a Treo 700w?

RE: VKB works with Treo 700w

Actually, I stopped using the VKB a few months after I posted those instructions. The time to pair the VKB with my Treo took upwards of 15 minutes, which was a problem since the VKB would time out. Since there was no application controlling the settings, I had nothing to adjust. I am hoping for a release of Windows 5.0-specific software that can be loaded down, to run the keyboard as all the other devices do. Including controlling the sound.
