Pairing with Sony UX (and other Vaios) - Instructions inside

I just picked up a VKB to use with my Vaio UX380, and was having the same problems as others - "Detection of services failed" during pairing.

The problem is simply the Toshiba bluetooth stack.

The links to other stacks provided by the admins here were all trial versions as far as I could tell. I installed the updated Toshiba stack from the link provided, but it doesn't actually work. It just complains that the trial period is already over and shuts down.

The secret is to ditch the crappy Toshiba stack completely and use the Windows stack. The Windows stack (at least in Vista Business) works great with the VKB and still works with my cell phone for EVDO tethering.

Step by Step Instructions:

Go to Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs, and uninstall "Windows Bluetooth Stack by Toshiba"

Afterwards, Windows will complain that it can't find a driver for your "UGX" - that's your bluetooth adapter.

(I followed some instructions found elsewhere on the web to edit my c:\windows\inf\bth.inf file, to add the Vaio's built in PnP ID to the file, but I'm pretty sure that wasn't necessary, since windows didn't want to use its built-in driver anyway, and I had to select one of the pre-existing adapter types. If these instructions here don't work for you, see below just in case)

Go to Device Manager and find the "UGX" with the exclamation point, and "Update Device Driver". Tell it you'll find the software, and when it gives up, tell it to show you all hardware available. Select Bluetooth, and then "Alps USB Bluetooth Adapter". Let it install the drivers.

After a restart, your bluetooth adapter should be functioning normally, but with the Windows stack instead of the Toshiba one.

You can pair the VKB normally as shown in the instructions and it should work fine.

I think other Vaios use the Toshiba stack as well, and these same instructions should work there.

If Windows won't let you use its built-in driver, go to Device Manager, select the UGX, and go to Properties. Under the Details tab, select "Hardware IDs" in the dropdown box, and copy both of those "Vid\Usb...." strings.

Edit the "bth.inf" file in your %windir\inf directory (probably c:\windows\inf), and add new lines under the Sony section, with a name of your choosing and the PnPIDs you copied above. Just follow the same format as all the other lines in the Hardware section of that file. It should be easy enough to figure out. Save it and try the above again.

Sony Vaio 280p and the Toshiba Bluetooth Stack

It has been found that the VKB is not compatible with the Toshiba Bluetooth Stack.

The VKB can work on computers and laptops that use this stack, if the Windows Bluetooth Stack is used as a replacement.

How to Replace the Toshiba Bluetooth Stack:

1. Download the install program "Bluetooth Monitor for MS stack Version 2.00" or later from the Toshiba WEB site.
Current link: http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/...oid=841048

2. Open the Control Panel and uninstall "Bluetooth Stack for Windows by Toshiba", which is currently installed, then reboot your PC.

3. Double click the downloaded "Bluetooth Monitor for MS Stack" version 2.00 or later. This will put this readme (Bluetooth Stack Installation Guide.txt) on the desktop and the setup program in the folder; c:\Toshiba\BTmonitor\ .

4. Run BTMON2INST.exe located in the folder c:\toshiba\BTmonitor to install the Bluetooth Monitor for MS Stack. Once installation is complete, restart the system to complete all changes.

Be sure SP2 is installed.
I recommed going into Device Manager, which is in Control Panel->System->Hardware, and updating the driver.
This way you will have the latest one.

More Detailed instructions from Toshiba can be found here:

RE: Sony Vaio 280p and the Toshiba Bluetooth Stack

This solution does not seem to work with the Fujitsu Sylistic series. It seems that the Toshiba Bluetooth adapters they utilize do not work with the MS Bluetooth Stack.

Any other options available or do I have to disable the onboard bluetooth and use a USB dongle?

RE: Sony Vaio 280p and the Toshiba Bluetooth Stack

I fixed the issue by turning off the internal blretoofh and buying an external USB dongle. However my first one from IOgear had the same problems as the internal Toshiba bluetooth.

I replaced this with a TrendNet TW - 104UB . It worked perfectly first time. The only issue now is I have to work out how to turn off / down the click bleeps without using the provided software. It is not recognizing the VKB .

Any ideas?

RE: Sony Vaio 280p and the Toshiba Bluetooth Stack

I tried this procedure three times wih my Sony UX280P to no avail. I believe I am picking up the wrong drivers. Can anyone suggest either were I might find the correct drivers (and specificaly which files I need - I am a real technical dummie :-) ) or another workaround?

Thanks
